A hinged door is usually the simplest choice for a pedestrian cold room. The leaf swings into the aisle, so enough clear space is required.

In short: check clear opening, swing direction, hinge capacity, latch, closer and inside safety release.

Frostbox standard rooms use a semi-recessed hinged design with an MTH Equa handle. The gasket should compress evenly without excessive closing force.

An overlay door sits over the opening, while a recessed or semi-recessed door fits partly into the frame. These descriptions affect dimensions and replacement parts, so use the exact door model when ordering hinges or seals.

For frequent use, inspect hinge play and closer operation. A door that sags should be safely supported before adjustment.

Hinged doors (standard)

SpecificationDetail
Standard sizes (Frostbox)700 × 1800 mm (rooms with internal width up to 1180 mm) or 900 × 1800 mm; other industry-typical sizes available on request
InsulationMatches panel core: 80, 100 or 120 mm
HingesCam-lift (self-rising) or spring-loaded self-closing
GasketPVC perimeter gasket; in freezer rooms a heating cable in the frame and threshold
HandleFlush-mounted Equa handle with internal safety release; lockable option
Opening directionLeft- or right-hand — specify at order

Cam-lift hinges raise the leaf slightly as it opens so it clears floor matting and falls shut under its own weight — a reliable self-close with no spring to fail.

Frostbox standard range: Door insulation tracks the panel catalogue — 80 mm and 100 mm for chill/cold rooms and 100 / 120 mm for freezing rooms. Match the door core to the wall it sits in, so the thermal envelope stays continuous.

Overlay doors (semi-rebated)

An overlay door is a hinged door that sits partially over the frame rather than inside the opening. On the Frostbox door the leaf overlaps the opening by 38.7 mm at each side and by 179.8 mm at the top only — there is no overlap at the bottom, where the leaf reaches down to the floor. This gives double gasket contact and a noticeably better seal than a flush leaf, while being more forgiving to install because hinge alignment is far less critical.

It shares all hinged-door sizes and hardware — and this semi-recessed hinged door is the Frostbox standard, supplied at 700 × 1800 mm (internal width up to 1180 mm) or 900 × 1800 mm with the Equa handle and internal emergency release. In the Frostbox range the tighter seal therefore comes as standard, not as an optional step-up.

Semi-recessed leaf overlap plan — Frostbox standard door drawn at handle height: a 700 / 900 mm opening in a 1000 / 1200 mm door panel with a 150 mm reveal each side; the leaf (40.2 mm) overlaps the opening by 38.7 mm per side and stands about 54 mm in front of the wall face, the hinge sits on the outer face and the leaf opens outward through a swing zone that must be kept clear. Front view: clear opening 700 / 900 × 1800 mm, a 179.8 mm overlap at the top only (the leaf stands on the floor), PVC perimeter seal and MTH Equa handle that also opens from inside. Freezer inset: heating cable in the frame and threshold. Rule: internal width up to 1180 mm takes the 700 door, above that the 900 door.
Semi-recessed door: overlap, swing zone and sizes

How to specify

  • Opening direction (left/right hand) and clearance around the swing path.
  • Insulation thickness matched to the panels — 80/100 mm chill, 100/120 mm freezer.
  • Gasket and frame for the temperature — see Gaskets, freezer detailing & the safety release.
