High-speed doors open and close quickly to reduce the time an opening is exposed. Some industrial models reach about 2 m/s, but actual speed depends on the product and safety settings.

In short: they are useful for very frequent traffic, often above roughly 50 cycles per hour, but they do not automatically replace an insulated night or security door.

Specify sensors, safety edges, emergency operation and protection from vehicle impact. In freezer use, the design must also deal with ice, pressure and perimeter heating or sealing.

The energy benefit depends on actual opening time, size and traffic. A fast door that is left open or frequently damaged will not deliver the expected result.

Where it fits

A rapid-roll curtain seals less tightly than a rigid door, so its placement depends on the room temperature:

  • Deep-freeze: most effective behind a primary insulated door or on the cold side of a buffer — the roll door handles traffic flow while the rigid door carries the seal.
  • Chill rooms and production aisles: where it carries the thermal duty alone, the cut in open time usually outweighs the looser seal.

Because the curtain opens and closes in seconds, a rapid-roll door is the strongest answer to the "frequent openings" problem — far more effective than asking staff to close a hinged door behind them.

When to choose high-speed

Choose a rapid-roll door once traffic exceeds roughly 50 cycles per hour, or wherever a forklift passes through continuously. For wide but lower-traffic openings, a sliding door seals better; for light traffic, a hinged or overlay door is simpler and cheaper.

High-speed roll doors are described here as industry context; they are not part of the standard Frostbox range. Frostbox supplies semi-recessed hinged doors as standard — for other door types contact [email protected].
