The gasket must remain flexible at the room temperature and match the exact door profile.

In short: freezer doors may need perimeter heating and heated drainage details. Every personnel door must open safely from inside, even when locked outside.

Check the seal for tears, hardening and uneven compression. Local ice may come from a damaged gasket, poor alignment or failed frame heating; replacing the gasket without diagnosis may not fix it.

The inside release should be visible, reachable and tested according to the site safety procedure. Do not use the room if a person could become trapped.

Before ordering, confirm clear opening, temperature, traffic, hinge side, frame construction and electrical requirements.

Gaskets and freezer detailing

The gasket and frame must suit the room temperature:

  • Chillers (0 °C and above): the door seals with a PVC perimeter gasket that closes the gap all round the leaf.
  • Freezers (−18 °C and below): moisture freezes any cold gap solid, so two measures are essential:
  • the same PVC perimeter gasket, compressed evenly all round when the door closes, and
  • a heated frame and threshold that keeps the perimeter just above freezing so the gasket can't ice up or the door freeze shut.

Skipping the heated frame on a freezer door is the most common specification error: it seals fine on day one, then ices to the frame within a week of real-world duty.

Safety: the internal release

Every cold-room door must let a person escape from the inside even when the outside handle is locked. On Frostbox doors an internal safety release is standard, with glow-in-the-dark marking to find it if the lights fail.

Freezer rooms often additionally require an interior emergency alarm button and battery-backed emergency lighting — see Accessories & options. Never specify or install a cold-room door without a working internal release.

Specifying a door — checklist

  • Opening direction (left/right hand) and clearance around the swing or slide path.
  • Insulation thickness matched to the panels — 80/100 mm chill, 100/120 mm freezer.
  • Gasket and frame for the temperature — PVC perimeter gasket as standard, plus a heating cable in the frame and threshold for a freezer.
  • Traffic rate to confirm the type — add a strip or air curtain if openings are frequent.
  • Safety — internal release on every door; emergency alarm and lighting on freezers where required.

For a guided room specification, use the Frostbox size calculator.
