Use these focused glossaries:
How the groups fit together
The four refrigeration-cycle components remove heat from inside the room and reject it outside. The construction terms describe how strongly the envelope resists heat trying to leak back in. The performance terms put a number on that leak plus everything else the room must absorb — so you can size the right unit. Read the four focused glossaries below in any order; start with construction if you are specifying panels, or the cycle if you are diagnosing a unit.
The four term groups
| Group | What it covers | Glossary |
|---|---|---|
| Construction & insulation | The insulated "box": cam-lock, PUR, R-value, U-value, thermal bridge, gasket | Construction & insulation terms |
| The refrigeration cycle | The five components that move heat: compressor, condenser, evaporator, expansion valve, refrigerant + condensate, defrost | Refrigeration cycle terms |
| Unit types | How the machinery is packaged: monoblock, split, MBP/LBP duty class | Unit type & operating-regime terms |
| Performance & sizing | Quantifying the cooling job: heat load, TD, air change | Performance & sizing terms |
