- Cam-Lock: hidden fastener pulling panels together.
- PUR: rigid polyurethane insulation foam.
- Lambda: material conductivity; lower is better.
- R-value: thermal resistance; higher is better.
- U-value: assembly transmittance; lower is better.
- Thermal bridge: local easy heat path.
- Gasket: flexible air seal.
In short: use complete-panel data for design.
Glossary
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Cam-lock | The mechanical joint that defines modular cold rooms. Rotating eccentric steel cams engage steel pins in the adjacent panel and draw the two together under compression, closing the foam cores and compressing the gasket. Assembled and disassembled with a hex key — no adhesives or welding. See What is a cam-lock cold room? |
| PUR (polyurethane) | The rigid foam insulating core used in Frostbox/MTH Algor panels. Low thermal conductivity gives strong thermal performance per millimetre. Note: the Algor core is PUR, not PIR — do not assume PIR-grade fire ratings. Typical PUR conductivity is λ ≈ 0.022–0.024 W/m·K (a generic figure, not a quoted MTH spec). |
| R-value | Thermal resistance of a panel — how strongly it resists heat flow. Higher is better. Depends on both the material (λ) and the thickness, so a thicker core gives a higher R-value. |
| U-value | Thermal transmittance — the rate of heat flow through the assembly. Lower is better. It is the inverse of R-value: the two describe the same thing from opposite ends. |
| Thermal bridge | A path where heat leaks through the insulation more easily than the surrounding panel — typically at joints, door frames, and pipe penetrations. A correctly locked cam-lock joint is designed to minimise it by compressing the gasket and closing the foam cores tightly together. |
| Gasket | The flexible seal (PVC or EPDM) compressed between mating surfaces to stop air leakage. Found in panel joints and around every door; a worn door gasket is a common cause of frost and energy waste. See Door gasket replacement |
Frostbox standard range: Panel thickness drives R-value. The Frostbox/MTH Algor catalogue runs 80 mm and 100 mm for chill rooms and 100 / 120 mm for freezers. Generic engineering tables that list 60, 150 or 200 mm are industry context, not Frostbox product options. See Panel specifications.
