Check door moisture, scheduled defrost, drainage and blocked airflow.

In short: protect products, use only the permitted manual defrost and never chip the coil.

For severe ice, move stock, isolate the unit and allow a natural thaw if the manual permits. Collect water. Rapid return, failed heaters, inaccessible drains or unusual frost patterns require service.

Symptoms

Heavy frost or solid ice on the evaporator coils, reduced airflow from the unit, and a room that struggles to hold temperature. Excess ice is self-reinforcing: it insulates the coil, so the unit runs longer, draws in more moisture, and ices further. The longer it is left, the worse it gets.

Diagnose the cause

Possible causeHow to checkSolution
Defrost not runningTrigger a manual defrost; confirm the heater energises.Check the defrost timer/controller schedule. Test the defrost heater element.
Defrost too shortIce remains after the cycle completes.Increase defrost duration; verify the termination temperature.
Defrost heater failedNo heat during defrost; the element stays cold.Replace the defrost heater — qualified technician.
Excessive humidityFrequent door openings or humid ambient conditions.Increase defrost frequency, reduce door openings, fit a strip curtain.
Blocked condensate drainWater pools in the drip tray and overflows, then refreezes.Clear the drain; pour warm water through to confirm flow.

A correctly sized Daikin condensing unit (for example the DB-O or SP-O families) defrosts on a schedule set in its controller. If you are seeing chronic icing, confirm the defrost parameters before assuming a hardware fault — the wrong frequency or termination temperature for the room's humidity is a far more common cause than a failed component.

Emergency de-icing procedure

If the coil is severely iced and the defrost system is not working, do not wait for the next scheduled cycle — restore airflow first, then diagnose:

  1. Remove all products from the cold room (protect the cold chain — move stock to backup storage).
  2. Switch off the refrigeration unit at the isolator.
  3. Leave the door open for natural thawing — this can take several hours.
  4. Never chip ice with sharp tools. Puncturing the evaporator coil releases the refrigerant charge and turns a cheap fix into a major repair.
  5. Collect meltwater with towels or a wet vacuum so it cannot refreeze in the drain.
  6. Restart and diagnose the underlying cause — defrost timer, heater, drain, or door discipline.
Step sequence (1–6) of the emergency de-icing procedure as a vertical flow, with a prominent warning band on step 4 ("No sharp tools — coil puncture = refrigerant loss").
