Local ice usually means moisture is reaching a cold seal.

In short: thaw gently, dry the surfaces and check gasket compression, alignment, door-open time and the fitted frame heater.

Do not judge every heater by touch; use the model instructions and qualified electrical testing. Do not apply lubricant unless approved for the gasket.

Symptoms

Ice forms around the door-frame perimeter, the door may freeze shut, and the gasket becomes encased in ice. This is most common on freezer rooms, where any moisture at the seal freezes on contact.

Diagnose the cause

Possible causeHow to checkSolution
Frame heater not working (freezers)The frame should be warm to the touch; if cold, the heater may have failed.Check the heater-cable connection; replace the heater if failed.
Damaged gasketVisible tears, compression damage, or gaps.Replace the gasket — see Door types & specifications.
Door misalignedIce forms more on one side; the door does not close evenly.Adjust hinges for even gasket compression.

Clearing and preventing frame ice

Never force a frozen door. Forcing it tears the gasket, which then leaks air, which causes more ice — a worsening loop.

  • Thaw gently. Apply gentle warming — a hair dryer or warm cloth — around the frame until the ice releases.
  • Lubricate the seal. A food-grade silicone lubricant on the gasket helps prevent ice adhesion.
  • Dry after long openings. Wiping the gasket dry after extended openings keeps moisture out of the seal.
  • Keep frame heaters healthy (freezers). Check that the frame is warm to the touch as part of routine inspection; a cold frame on a freezer points straight to a failed heater cable.

Replacing an electrical frame heater is a job for a qualified refrigeration technician. Gasket replacement and hinge adjustment are operator-level — see Worn gasket and the paper-note test for the gasket procedure and the paper-note (banknote) seal test.
