Replace a gasket when it is torn, hard, permanently flattened or fails to seal after the door is correctly aligned.
In short: condition matters more than age; there is no universal two-to-five-year replacement rule.
Local ice, light gaps and weak paper-test points are warning signs. First clean the gasket and check hinges, latch, threshold and frame geometry. A new gasket will not correct a sagging door.
Inspection symptoms
Inspect the gasket weekly as part of routine maintenance (see Cleaning procedures). Replace it when you observe any of the following:
| Symptom | What it means |
|---|---|
| Visible tears, cracks, or holes | The seal is broken; air leaks continuously |
| Permanent compression (no spring-back) | The gasket no longer fills the gap against the frame |
| Hardened or brittle material | UV, age, or cold has degraded the elastomer |
| Repeated paper-note test failures | Sealing force is gone around part of the perimeter |
| Ice forming around the door frame (freezers) | Humid air is infiltrating and freezing on contact |
| Visible light gaps with the door closed | A direct line-of-sight leak |
The paper-note (dollar-bill) test
Close a banknote or sheet of paper in the door and pull. With a healthy seal it drags; if it slides out freely, the gasket has lost compression at that point. Test every 200–300 mm around the whole perimeter — gaskets usually fail at the latch-side mid-height and the bottom corners first.
Why it matters
A failing gasket is rarely just a comfort issue. A 3 mm gap around a standard door is equivalent to a permanent open hole; on a freezer it can add double-digit percentages to running cost and overload the refrigeration unit — whether that is a Daikin condensing unit or an integrated monoblock.
If the gasket compresses unevenly — tight on one side, loose on the other — the door may be out of alignment rather than worn. Check the hinges before assuming the gasket is at fault (see Door problems).
