In short: clean both faces and folds with a soft cloth and compatible product, then dry completely.

Inspect for tears, hardening and permanent deformation. Remove dirt from the threshold and check that the door closes evenly.

A paper test can locate weak compression, but a loose point may be caused by door alignment rather than the gasket itself.

Do not apply oil or silicone unless the gasket manufacturer approves the exact product. Residue can damage material or contaminate nearby surfaces.

Why the gasket needs weekly attention

Grease, food particles, and dirt lodged in the folds prevent a clean seal. A leaking gasket lets warm, humid air in: the unit runs longer, frost builds faster, and the rubber wears out sooner. Cleaning is also your weekly chance to inspect for damage.

Frequency: weekly.

Step by step

  1. Inspect for tears, cracks, or permanent compression as you clean.
  2. Wipe with warm soapy (food-safe) water and a soft cloth.
  3. Clean inside the folds — this is where debris collects and where seals fail first.
  4. Rinse with clean water.
  5. Dry completely. Residual moisture on a gasket freezes solid in freezer rooms and tears the seal on the next door opening.
  6. Optionally apply food-grade silicone lubricant to keep the rubber supple — essential for freezer-temperature gaskets.

The paper test

Pro tip — the paper test: Close a slip of paper (or a banknote) in the door and pull. If it slides out freely, the seal is weak at that point — adjust the door or plan a gasket replacement. Repeat at several points around the perimeter.

When a gasket fails these checks, it has reached the end of its life — see Door gasket replacement.
