In short: keep the door closed, protect airflow, load products at the correct temperature and record checks required by the site procedure.
At the start of work, check the display, independent monitoring, door seal, unusual water or ice and clear airflow. During the day, plan entries and keep products away from the evaporator discharge and return path.
Do not use a storage room as a blast chiller unless it was designed for that process. At closing, confirm the door is latched, lights are off where appropriate and no alarm is active.
The four habits
| Habit | Why it matters | Read more |
|---|---|---|
| Door discipline | Door infiltration is typically 30–50 % of the energy bill, and an open door warms the room for minutes. | Door discipline |
| Product placement | A cold room cools by circulating air; block the path and you get warm spots. | Product placement |
| Temperature monitoring | A daily logged reading catches problems early and is a legal requirement for commercial storage. | Temperature monitoring |
| Loading new stock | Every delivery brings heat in; staged loading keeps the room food-safe while the compressor catches up. | Loading new products |
Why they reinforce each other
The four habits work as a set. Tight door discipline keeps infiltration low; clear airflow lets the cold the system produces actually reach the product; daily logging catches problems early; and disciplined loading prevents self-inflicted temperature excursions. Together they protect both your energy cost and your food-safety record — and they cost nothing but attention.
For the running-cost side of these same habits, see Energy efficiency. For the legal temperature limits, excursion procedure, and inspection readiness, see Food safety & HACCP compliance.
