Monitoring records conditions and warns people when action is needed. It does not correct a fault by itself.

In short: select sensors, alarm routes, data retention and backup power from the risk assessment.

Useful inputs include room air temperature, product-simulation probes, humidity, door status and power failure. A remote platform can notify staff, but alarms need named recipients and an escalation procedure.

Place sensors away from the direct evaporator discharge and other unrepresentative locations. Verify them against a suitable reference and document checks.

For BMS integration, confirm the controller protocol and clearly define which system can change settings. Protect remote access and keep an audit trail where required.

What each device does

DeviceFunctionWhen you need it
Digital temperature loggerContinuous recording (USB download or wireless/cloud) with high/low alarmsHACCP, retail, and catering food storage
Remote monitoring systemReal-time temperature on phone/web; SMS or email excursion alerts; historical reportingUnattended, out-of-hours, or critical stores
Alarm systemHigh/low temperature alarms, power-failure alarm (battery-backed), and door-open alarmFreezers and any high-value contents

Record vs. warning

The logger and the alarm answer two different questions:

  • The logger proves, after the fact, that temperature stayed in range — the audit record an inspector or customer asks for.
  • The remote/alarm system warns you while there is still time to act — a supply failure, a door left open, or a fault developing.

A serious store needs both: the record for compliance and the alert to prevent loss. If alarms trip repeatedly, treat it as a fault to diagnose — see Temperature problems.

Monitoring layer diagram — an in-room temperature sensor feeds a digital logger, which uploads its records to the cloud; the cloud sends SMS or e-mail alerts to a phone and feeds a dashboard. Three alarm types: temperature, power failure and door open.
