Stable temperature needs door control, airflow, clean equipment and checked sensors. Monitoring intervals follow risk and HACCP, not one universal schedule.
Save energy by fixing openings, seals and condenser airflow before replacing equipment. Panel fire performance comes from the product declaration, not the word PUR.
Electrical phase depends on the unit data. After power loss, keep doors closed, record time and assess products under the emergency plan.
In short: measure first, then act.
Temperature monitoring & control
How do I keep the temperature stable? Combine accurate, calibrated thermostats, well-maintained door gaskets, sensible door discipline, and good internal airflow. Don't pack product hard against the evaporator or walls. Troubleshooting unstable temperatures is in Temperature problems.
How can I monitor temperature remotely? Use wireless sensors or IoT data loggers feeding a dashboard or app with live readings and alerts. For compliance, also keep a temperature log — manual or digital — to evidence performance over time.
How often should sensors be calibrated? At least once or twice a year, more often where regulation or product risk demands it. Drifting sensors are a common, easily-missed cause of both spoilage and failed audits.
Energy efficiency
What are the quick wins for cutting energy use?
| Move | Why it helps |
|---|---|
| Minimise door openings; fit strip/air curtains | Stops warm, humid air pouring in |
| Keep gaskets and seals tight | Prevents continuous cold loss |
| Keep condenser coils clean | Maintains heat rejection efficiency |
| Use LED lighting | Low heat, low energy |
| Site the unit cool, shaded, ventilated | Stops it fighting high ambient heat |
Detail and worked savings in Energy efficiency.
How does panel thickness affect running cost? Thicker panels have a higher R-value, so less heat leaks in and the unit runs less. The right thickness for your temperature pays for itself in lower bills and steadier temperatures — see Panel specifications.
Are variable-speed compressors worth it? Often yes. A variable-speed (inverter) compressor matches output to demand instead of hard on/off cycling, trimming energy use and easing wear — most beneficial on variable-load rooms. Frostbox specifies Daikin units; see Refrigeration units.
Compliance & safety
What regulations apply to cold storage? Typically food-safety frameworks (e.g. HACCP), local health and building codes, and — for the refrigerant — EU F-gas rules under Regulation (EU) 2024/573. Requirements vary by country and sector. Food-safety practice is in Food safety & HACCP compliance.
What about fire rating of the panels? PUR cores of this type are typically formulated to be self-extinguishing, but any fire-resistance, Euroclass, or EN 14509 claim for the Algor panels depends on the manufacturer's Declaration of Performance. Where a project needs a formal fire rating, request the current certification — available on request — rather than assuming a class.
What employee-safety features should be fitted? As standard: internal emergency-release door handles (so no one can be trapped), safety lighting, and temperature alarms. Some sites add panic buttons. Door detail is in Door types & specifications.
Maintenance & upgrades
How often should a professional inspect the system? Plan a qualified-technician check once or twice a year (semi-annual for heavy-use sites or extreme climates). The cadence and tasks are in Maintenance schedule overview.
When should the door gasket be replaced? As soon as it shows tears, hardening, compression set, or fails to seal cleanly — a leaking gasket wastes energy and invites ice. Step-by-step replacement is in Door gasket replacement.
What maintenance does the refrigeration unit need? Mainly keeping condenser coils clean and the fans clear and functioning — at least quarterly, more in dusty environments — plus monitoring refrigerant and avoiding needless power cycling. See Condenser maintenance.
Single-phase or three-phase power? Three-phase usually runs larger units more efficiently; single-phase suffices for smaller installations or sites without a three-phase supply. Frostbox provides electrical installation guidelines with each order.
Troubleshooting
It isn't reaching the set temperature — what first? Check door seals, the defrost cycle, condenser-coil cleanliness, and the refrigeration components. Many cases trace to a leaking gasket, a blocked condenser, or a defrost fault. Diagnosis flow in Temperature problems.
Why is there heavy frost or ice buildup? Usually frequent/long door openings, a gasket leak, or a defrost issue. Tighten door discipline, check the seal, and verify defrost. A door that then sticks is normally ice round the frame or a worn gasket — see Ice & condensation issues and Door problems.
The cold room just lost power — what do I do? Keep the door shut to hold the cold. When power returns, confirm the setpoint is recovering and inspect product before returning it to sale. For sites that can't tolerate downtime, fit a UPS/voltage stabiliser or backup generator. When in doubt, call a professional.
