Clear ice and debris, check whether the gasket has folded out, compare gaps and test hinge play.
In short: do not force the leaf or move the latch blindly.
Heavy doors must be supported before adjustment. If the frame is out of square, inspect the floor, panels and frame fixing; latch adjustment would only hide the cause.
Symptoms
The door does not latch, swings open by itself, or leaves a visible gap around the frame when shut.
Causes and fixes
| Possible cause | How to check | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Hinges out of adjustment | Door hangs crooked; the gap around the frame is uneven. | Loosen the mounting bolts, realign the door, retighten. |
| Worn hinges | Door sags; you feel play or wobble when lifting the door edge. | Replace the hinges. Heavy-duty cam-lift hinges suit high-traffic doors. |
| Self-closing mechanism failed | Door stays where you leave it instead of swinging shut. | Adjust or replace the door closer; check spring tension. |
| Obstruction in the frame | Ice, debris, or a damaged gasket blocks closure. | Clear the obstruction and inspect the gasket. |
| Frame distortion | The frame is no longer square — can indicate panel movement. | Check panel alignment and cam-lock tension; re-level if needed. |
Work from cheap to expensive
Hinge adjustment costs nothing and resolves most "won't close" complaints. Only move on to replacing hardware once a simple realignment fails to restore an even gap and a clean latch.
If the frame itself has gone out of square, the problem is structural, not a door fault — re-check the panel joints and cam-lock tension before touching the door. See Panel specifications.
If closing the door still leaves a draught after the hinges and latch are good, the seal is the next suspect — run the paper-note test.
